Dominic Toretto règne sur les rues de Los Angeles à la tête d'une équipe de fidèles qui partage son goût du risque, sa passion de la vitesse, son culte des voitures lancées à plus de 250 km/h dans des rodéos urbains. Ses journées sont consacrées à bricoler et relooker des modèles haut de gamme importés à grands frais du Japon ou d'Allemagne, à les rendre plus performants et plus voyants, et à organiser des joutes illicites où des dizaines de postulants s'affronteront sous le regard enamouré de leurs groupies...
The Fast & The Furious is loosely based on an article in a magazine about street clubs that race Japanese cars late at night. The film stars Vin Diesel as Domenic Toretto, the leader of a street gang that is under suspicion of stealing expensive electronic equipment. Paul Walker plays an undercover police officer that attempts to find out who exactly is stealing the equipment, while falling for Domenic's younger sister played by Jordana Brewster.
