Cécile et Alain vivent ensemble depuis vingt ans. Alain est le patron d'une petite entreprise de haute technologie à Grenoble, ça tourne bien, très bien même et, bien qu'elle n'en ait pas besoin pour vivre, Cécile n'a jamais arrêté son métier de prof. C'est un couple modèle, épatant, indestructible, au grand désespoir de Georges, un ami médecin qui n'est pas insensible au charme de Cécile. Cécile a toujours été d'une nature inquiète, mais cette fois, elle en est persuadée, Alain lui cache quelque chose. Il a raison de lui cacher ce qui le tracasse car elle se ferait vraiment du souci. Alain pense qu'il va mourir. Dans quelques jours, Georges va l'opérer pour en avoir le coeur net. Aussi dure que soit la vérité, Alain ne la cachera pas à Cécile. Il veut juste lui éviter de s'inquiéter pour rien si ça devait se révéler bénin. Pieux mensonge donc ! Cécile ne sait qu'une chose, Alain lui ment.
Alain Coste (François Morel) is going through a crisis – experiencing worrying symptoms, he is convinced that he doesn’t have long to live even though his doctor assures him that he is just suffering from stress. He tries to keep his concerns to himself, but his increasingly neurotic behaviour only arouses the suspicion of his wife (Ornella Muti), who has a police detective follow him.
