“This is like confessing to bad taste, like enjoying banana splits with 8 scoops of different ice cream and three sauces, plus nuts, cherries and a paper parasol. Time Bandits is one funny, over the top comedy with lots of ideas (perhaps too many of them) that just keep coming right up to the rather odd end.
The plot is loose; a band of dwarves steal a map of time holes left by their boss The Supreme Being (a school headmasterly Ralph Richardson.) They are already in some hot water with the Boss, having made some out-of-spec trees that are bright pink and smell just terrible. They are also being chased by The Power of Evil, played by David Warner who infuses the Devil with a sense of real humor. The Power of Evil is fairly critical the Creator's efforts (he's contemptuous of slugs, nipples for men and other questionable developments of nature.) He's smitten with technology and longs to hear about lasers, fast breeder reactors and computers.
The film romps through time, space and a lot of amusing scenes. There's a great cameo by Sean Connery as Agamemmnon, and much more. If you like Monty Python, you might or might not like this film. It's no Holy Grail, but it is creative as only Terry Gilliam can be. Personally, it's one of my favorites.” – Customer Review on Amazon.com

“How's this for a zany plot? A bunch of mischievious dwarves steal a map from the Supreme Being which shows them how to find holes that lead to various historical periods. One such hole brings them out in a small boy's bedroom. The boy joins them, and together they visit diverse lands such as Napoleonic France; Sherwood Forest during the days of Robin Hood; the Titanic; the Middle East during the reign of Agamemnon; etc. Oh yes, and all the time they are being pursued by the Devil (referred to here as “Evil”), who would dearly love to steal the map for himself.
Time Bandits is an outlandish, often hilarious, always engaging fantasy story with a magical cast. It wins over the audience by offering them a refreshingly unique story, and littering it with memorable episodes which vary in tone from hilarious to frightening, from historical to mythological. Lots of energetic performances add to the fun, with Ian Holm doing a superb Napoleon, Sean Connery an imposing Agamemnon, and Ralph Richardson a delightfully eccentric Supreme Being. The film's peculiar ending used to upset me as a youngster, but now I appreciate its ingenuity and it evokes in me memories of a famous Philip Larkin poem which begins with the infamous line: “They f*** you up your mum and dad, they may not mean to but they do.......”.
Time Bandits is a triumph of imagination. It isn't quite flawless, due to a bland performance by Craig Warnock as the boy and a somewhat dismal episode featuring an angry ogre, but flaws aside it is certainly one of those films with which it is always a pleasure to while away a couple of hours.” – IMDB.com
