The Big Red One - Reconstruction (DVDrip - 1980)

A US Army sergeant who participated in the First World War now leads a rifle squad in the same division in which he's served, the First Infantry. The squad participates in combat action from storming Vichy French Africa into the long seige of Sicily and Italy, into D-Day at Omaha Beach, and onward through the push to Germany. Along the way the squad gets involved in several incidents with civilians,such as a French woman about to give birth and also in a firefight in an insane asylum.Throughout the war the Sergeant has engaged in a mini-battle of wills with Pvt. Griff, a semi-pacifist whose convictions are destroyed in a horrific scene amid the human genocide of a concentration camp in 1945.

I watched the full, restored version of The Big Red One, having only ever seen the previous version missing some 47 minutes. Fuller outdid himself here with this one, his masterpiece. A largely authentic account {details were embellished for cinematic reasons} from a man who was there. The Big Red One is a largely frank, matter of fact film in cinematic considerations, typical Fuller, a no nonsense filmmaker was he. It directly displays some, if not most of his own experiences of WWII. It takes us through major fronts of the war, Africa, Normandy, Sicily. There are also segments devoted to other parts of Europe that the director found himself in during his time with the 1st Infantry division, "The Big Red One" of the film's title.

The highlights of the film are the dialog, the rich, yet gritty cinematography and the naturalistic performances of the leads, particularly excellent are the great Lee Marvin, Mark Hamill and Robert Carradine. All perfectly suited to the environment. There are some fantastic moments of humanity for such a tough film, particularly when the soldiers interact with the locals in France, Belgium and Italy. There's a scene near the end in Czechoslovakia with Marvin's sarge and a young boy that is quite touching. Whoever thinks Fuller didn't have an eye for tender moments should be immediately directed to this scene. Wonderful film, so glad it was finally restored and given the full DVD treatment it deserves. On a side note it's amazing what Fuller proved he could do on such a small budget and succeeds in delivering a film devoid of empathy or contrived and manipulative pathos as so many war films end up doing. Instead TBR1 simply states survival as its main dissertation. As the close of the film with Hamill's voice-over states, the only glory was survival. IMDB user comment

Au-delà de la gloire, la version inédite. Sorti en salles en 1980 dans une version de 1h53, Au-delà de la gloire narre l'expérience de quatre GI's américains et de leur sergent perdus en pleine seconde guerre mondiale. Mais Samuel Fuller n'était pas content de ce premier montage trop court, restituant imparfaitement un récit largement inspiré de son expérience vécue. Sue et lui avec leurs enfants traversent donc les États Unis (en voiture) pour retrouver... le Bronx qu'ils ont quitté ? La fraîcheur de leur amour ? Est-ce trop tard ?

For their first film, the Clash could've easily cast themselves in the lead. The fiery foursome, however, were nothing if not unpredictable. Just as the little known Phil Daniels was the star of Quadrophenia--rather than the Who--the completely unknown Ray Gange is the star of the more vérité-like Rude Boy. The year is 1978 and England has gone to the dogs, with the National Front on the rise and rioting in the streets. Ray, as he's also known in the film, is a bleary-eyed punk, who works in a hole-in-the-wall Brixton sex shop. The 20-year-old blows off steam by going to see the Clash. Sometimes he hangs out with them. Eventually, Ray becomes their roadie, but the band fails to convince him that the left-wing has any more to offer than the right. "I don't think you should mix your music with politics," he finally tells Joe Strummer. "It annoys me." In this re-mastered and expanded edition, the quartet performs "I Fought the Law," "White Riot" with Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey, and 15 other songs, both live and in rehearsal. As for Gange, he isn't a great actor, but he's an engaging presence, and Rude Boy plays like a rambling cross between Alan Clarke (Made in Britain) and early Mike Leigh (Meantime). It may be fiction, but feels like fact, and the abundance of early material from the Clash makes up for any shortcomings.

Doolittle ne veut pas rester mineur et décide de se rendre à Washington où l'on demande des bûcherons. Enceinte, Loretta va chez ses parents en attendant que son mari s'installe en ville. Peu après, il la rappelle. Six ans plus tard, le jeune a quatre enfants...

The movie was adapted from Lynn's biography written with George Vecsey. Loretta Lynn was one of the first female superstars in country music and remains a defining presence within the genre; with her strong, clear, hard-country voice and tough, no-nonsense songs about husbands who cheat and abuse and wives who weren't about to be pushed around, Lynn introduced a feminist mindset to Nashville years before the phrase "women's liberation" became common currency. One of eight children born to Ted Webb (Levon Helm), a coal miner raising a family despite grinding poverty in Butcher Hollow, KY, Loretta married Doolittle "Mooney" Lynn (Tommy Lee Jones) when she was only 13 years old.
